Interview with Jorge Cervera Hauser

Can you tell us a bit about your background, and how you got started taking underwater photos/video?
My initial approach to the open ocean came through sport fishing. My grandfather used to run a taxidermy business in Mexico and used to sponsor the sport fishing tournaments of Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo. I would know all the game fish by heart, even though I wasn’t that keen into fishing myself. I decided to take up scuba diving, and after randomly seeing my very first shark in Belize in 2007, I fell in love with sharks and shark diving. The camera part came natural, I studied film and television, and always did photographic and cinematographic work for a living. I am fortunate to have a story about my photography on Wired Magazine.
What gear have you used in the past?
My first serious gear was a Canon 5DMKII in an Aquatica housing. Nauticam was just starting up and never released a housing for that particular camera.
What system are you using now? What do you like about it?
I have a Canon 1DX with a 14mm lens, Nauticam housing and a 9″ Zen glass dome. What I love about Nauticam is how perfectly everything seals, you just feel super confident with your gear. I appreciate the quality of the materials as well, you can tell right away it’s not a cheap housing… and by cheap I’m not talking about price, but quality.
Tell us a bit about the kinds of diving you do, favorite locations, etc?
I love feediving in the open ocean and I love Baja. My passion is photographing big animals out in the open ocean. Just the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by the big blue is a huge reality check, and a humbling experience that makes you realize just how small and insignificant you really are. And for the camera, I’m in love with the speed and focus accuracy I get from the 1DX.
